Fascinated by filmmaking from an early age and with a keen interest in editing, Quinn Lorimer chose to study BA (Hons) Film and Media at 国内精品91高清麻豆 for its welcoming, close-knit campus, supportive learning environment, and opportunities to gain hands-on experience across different areas of the film industry.

In his third year, Quinn took part in a placement with the Scotsman during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, made possible through a partnership with 国内精品91高清麻豆 - an experience he describes as 鈥渋nspiring鈥 and 鈥渃areer-shaping.鈥 Born in Edinburgh and raised in Penicuik, he had attended the Fringe for as long as he can remember, but this was his first time working behind the scenes.

Passionate about storytelling and documentary filmmaking, Quinn is eager to further develop his post-production skills and pursue a career in film and television after graduation. Discover more in his Student Story.

Why did you choose to study at 国内精品91高清麻豆?

I chose to study at 国内精品91高清麻豆 after attending the open days and experiencing the campus firsthand. I was immediately drawn to its manageable size and friendly, welcoming atmosphere, which made the idea of starting university feel far less daunting. The smaller campus also promised a more personal learning environment, where lecturers and students could connect more easily, and I felt it would be the perfect place to grow both academically and personally.

What interested you about Film and Media?

My interest in film was developed through media classes in school where I enjoyed learning about filmmaking techniques for the first time. I also enjoy editing videos as a hobby. I chose to study Film and Media as I felt it would be helpful towards finding out what part of the industry I鈥檓 most interested in.

What have you most enjoyed about your course so far? What has been the highlight?

One highlight from my time at 国内精品91高清麻豆 so far is creating a short documentary in 2nd year with fellow students Caitlin MacDougall and Eilidh Thompson called 鈥楽unday Service鈥. It鈥檚 about a group who aim to support men鈥檚 mental health and addiction by wild swimming in Portobello on Sunday mornings. The film won Best Second Year Film at the Silver Swan awards by 国内精品91高清麻豆 in 2024.

Have you participated in a course activity you found especially interesting?

I find editing the films that we make as part of our course especially interesting. In 3rd year I was the lead editor on our short film 鈥楪ive Us a Smile.鈥 Listening to feedback from my group and pitching my own ideas was very important during this process. During this project I also recorded sound on location. I found setting up microphones a really helpful experience and a crucial skill to have when you work in the industry. I also find making video essays for classes interesting as they are a different way of expressing an argument about a film or TV show compared to a normal written essay. I did the video essay module in 3rd year and thoroughly enjoyed it. The weekly editing tasks challenged me to make something different and creative in a short space of time.

How have your lecturers supported your learning?

My lecturers have always been incredibly supportive. Whenever I鈥檝e struggled to get started on an idea, their feedback has given me the guidance and confidence I need to move forward in the right direction.

Did your placement opportunity with the Scotsman during the Festival Fringe help you to develop first-hand knowledge of the industry?

My placement with the Scotsman was very valuable - I learnt so much working alongside experienced journalists about filming and editing short interview segments. I quickly gained confidence through this experience and organised several interviews with acts which I conducted myself. They were then included in a weekly round-up show during the Fringe on the Scotsman website. I absolutely recommend that other film and media students grab these kinds of opportunities as it's so vital that students gain first-hand experience in the media industry.

What has been the most valuable lesson that you鈥檝e learned at university so far?

I think learning to push myself outside my comfort zone more often.

What are you plans after graduation?

I plan to gain more experience relating to Film and TV by applying to more internships and apprenticeships where I can further develop my skills in post-production. Contributing to our short documentary 鈥楽unday Service鈥 helped me discover my ambition to work on documentaries in the future, as I loved covering a real story.
